TWENTY-THREE

Wayne bent down, slit open a box, pulled out jumbo-sized plastic jars of ketchup, mustard, and pickles, and stacked them on the shelves in the storage room.

“How’s it coming?” Mark Steele put a hand on his shoulder.

“One more box.”

“You’re missing all the fun,” Mark said. “Mort’s on a roll, butting heads with George and Hattie over what the mayor said. As usual, his mouth’s way ahead of his brain. So how was your ride with Hot Rod?”

“Great. Beck surprised me how good a driver she is.”

“You’re awfully quiet this morning. Seem kinda subdued.”

“Now that’s a big word.” He forced a smile. “Busy’s more like it.”

“If you don’t wanna miss Mort in full form, hurry up with that box.”

“Okay, I’ll be right out.”

Wayne clenched his jaw. Could the morning drag any more slowly? He’d hardly slept last night, wrestling with what to do. It had to have been Beck who was in the house, or he’d have been arrested by now. But why’d she go out there? How much did she see? He looked at his watch and sighed. She wouldn’t be home from school before he started his shift at Abernathy’s.

Wayne picked up the last box and dropped it on the floor. He’d planned too long and played too well to lose now. Not even Beck was going to get in his way.

And what was with Charlie Kirby’s statement? Wayne didn’t want forgiveness. He wanted outrage! He took the box cutter and stabbed the cardboard, then slit the tape across the top of the box and yanked open the flaps.

Things were getting too risky. Maybe it was time to get rid of the girls.
